10 Things I've Learnt About Blogging

10 Things I've Learnt About Blogging

Although this is a new blog, it is not my first ever attempt at blogging. I have been blogging for over a year now and have learnt so much during that time.  When people say blogging is easy I always feel a sense of "shut up, or I'll punch you" because if you're a blogger yourself you will understand how beyond not "easy" it actually is. There are so many different aspects of blogging that, to be honest when I started I didn't think could be possible. You become a photographer, digital marketer and content creator all in one go. If that is not overwhelming, I don't know what is!

Blogging has been the best decision that I have made because I have learnt new skills and I think that my writing has improved as well. Also, it has one of the best communities that I know, ok, sometimes there can be arguments, but what family doesn't argue?

learnt about blogging

10 things I’ve learnt from blogging:

  1. Catchy Blog Titles
  2. Twitter Chats
  3. Promotion
  4. High-quality images
  5. Gaining followers is a long process
  6. You can't please everyone
  7. Don't compare yourself to other bloggers
  8. What works for you might not work for everyone
  9. Don't be so hard on yourself when you miss a deadline
  10. Never give up!

Catchy Blog Titles

These make such a difference to a number of readers you get when you post a new blog post, it either makes it or breaks it! It's so important to engage people into your blog straight away, as we all know first impressions make all the difference. I am not saying to over exaggerate your blog title because nobody likes that, just make it interesting for people to be curious to click on your title.  My best blog titles that have made the most help is when I use 'how to' or my 'top 10 favourite ______ are" because these will be useful to the audience in some way.

Twitter Chats

The different chats are so much fun, where you can engage with other bloggers who have all been lovely and supportive. I have started joining more and it makes an hour go so fast! No more boring evenings trying to find something on the TV. Just join a chat and get social! There are always chats around on twitter, meaning the choice of which one you would like to join is endless. Therefore, if there is a chat you do not really relate too, there are always others you can get involved in! My ultimate favourite chats are with #GRLPOWR, there are lovely supportive bloggers every time I go on that chat. If you haven't had an opportunity to be involved with #grlpowr chat,  the are on a Tuesday and Sunday at 9 pm and Thursday at 8 pm.

Promotion

This is hard work but totally necessary, how do you expect people to read your blog if you don't tell anyone about it? I recently downloaded buffer for twitter and it makes a huge difference as you can schedule tweets! I have used the trial runs on Tailwind and now I am trying a trial in Board Booster to see which one I prefer. I never thought I would be spending so much time scheduling when I started blogging. I can be so boring, I need a virtual assistant!

what have i learnt blogging

High-Quality Images

These are so important, especially for the look of your blog and it just makes it that much more appealing to other people stopping by. I have had a recent makeover and have made all my feature photos similar to one another to keep my blog consistent all the way through. I think this works so much better than it did before. Stock photographs are a life-saver for this when you don't have time to create your own.  I have also been lucky enough to get a DSLR camera too, so I am going to be practising my photography this summer and making my photographs beautiful!

Gaining Followers Is a Long Process

I never thought I'd become an overnight sensation! But that would be nice right? But I didn't think it would take so long to get a following of readers. I think this is still something I need to work on, but I'm so grateful for the ones I have who put up with me on this blog!

You Can't Please Everyone

This is such a good lesson to learn. It's so true that you can't please everyone so I have just tried to write about things I am passionate for so that I keep true to myself and my readers. If your readers can trust you and know that what your writing about is genuine then the right followers will come to you!

Don't Compare Yourself To Other Bloggers

Every blogger is unique and different, so just be yourself, that's what will be bringing in readers! If everyone wrote about the same thing and had the same view on everything then it wouldn't be the diverse place it is. And that's what I love! I also have some days when I compare myself to other bloggers and I have to just remind myself why I started blogging in the first place. Yes, you need to look at numbers to see if you are growing as a blog but do not let them control your blogging journey.

What Works For You Might Not Work For Everyone

There's always someone commenting on how long a blog post to be to be successful or what types of posts are more popular for others, or how to edit your photos to make all these new followers come to your page. Well, the truth is that yes that might of worked for them but it doesn't necessarily mean it will work on your blog. I've tried writing longer posts because I read a blog saying it does better within the google search engine. But I've had more engagement from shorter blog posts, and I prefer people commenting and engaging in my posts rather than how well it does on google. Each to their own I guess.

Don't Be So Hard On Yourself When You Miss A Deadline

No one is going to hate you for not posting anything on one day, so I need to learn not to be so hard on myself when I do miss a day I would normally post. I have started another university course so I am going to super busy with that, right now, I'm writing this in between writing a 3000-word essay! So from now on, I will promise myself to be ok with a missed day of a blog post!

Never Give Up!

Yes, it's ok to have breaks from the blogging scene but I will never give up on my little corner of the Internet. It allows me to express myself and allows me to put all my thoughts in one place. Just because it sometimes might seem that nobody is interested in your blog, doesn't mean that nobody is, there is always that one loyal reader (even if it is a family member) that will love what you are writing about!

And Finally...

...just have fun blogging, learn new things and meet new people. Otherwise, you will just burn out and it will feel more like a chore than something you enjoy. And remember that any goal, little or big, is worth celebrating and us fellow bloggers are more than happy to celebrate with you- well at least I am.

What have you learnt on your blogging journey?
