Pros and Cons of Bullet Journaling

Pros and Cons of Bullet Journaling

As you are probably guessing I am a huge fan of the Bullet Journal system, it gives me a reason for my horrendous stationery addiction. I have two on the go, and if you think that is obsessive, I have also bought two other ones for when those become full (I am fully prepared). I have just accepted the fact that I am going to lose a draw for my washi tape collection, plus another for all the pens that I have lying around to fulfil my love for this journal. It also helps with my creativity where I am free to draw as many doodles and mandalas as I want, which allows me to keep practising my love for art. If you have no idea what I am talking about then it might be a good idea to read about starting a bullet journal.

There are so many pros for me, as I am in love with the flexibility, creativity and productivity it provides me. However, this system may not be right for some of my readers, so I am giving you a comprehensive list of the pros and cons of starting this journal.

Pros of the Bullet Journal

Flexibility

I feel like I have used this word to death, but there is no other word to describe this system. When you are writing in a blank notebook and you are making all the pages to your needs- it doesn’t get much more flexible than that. You can decide whether you want to go full blown crazy with doodles and colour or keep it simple and minimalistic.

Creativity

It is a way of being creative; from simply designing your page spreads to full blown doodles. I also have found a love for practising calligraphy within my bullet journal because I think it looks so much better than my boring plain writing. Obviously, you do not need to make it that fancy, as it is your journal you can decorate as you like- go crazy with washi tape and fancy handwriting or minimal with lovely neat lines and some bullet points- it is up to you!

Tracking

This is a great system if you need to keep track of your spending, habits, exercise, TV series or films to watch, books you’ve read. I particularly love tracking TV series because it reminds me where I have got to when I am watching or re-watching a series. I should start tracking exercise really but I need to find the motivation to actually start working out! If anyone has any tips about getting into a habit of exercise please let me know. I have tried and failed so many times!

Cons of Bullet Journaling

You have to make all of your page spreads…

…which can be really time-consuming, especially if you are like me and have decided to make monthly, weekly and daily spreads, this normally takes me a good 2 hours to complete. Unlike other planners where all the pages are there for you and you can just skip to other pages as and when you need to.

It is harder to plan in advance

Because you are making each spread yourself it is sometimes difficult to plan ahead in the bullet journal as you only have the future log as an overview for the whole year. It can mean that you cannot really plan much in advance. To overcome this slightly I always put a ‘next week’ section in the weekly spread.

Costly

If you are a stationery collector, like me, all the materials can add up and the journals can be expensive in themselves too. I will recommend using an old notebook to test it out to see if you do think that bullet journaling is right for you. I did this and I realised how much I loved it so I dived into the more expensive Leuchtturm 1917 notepad, with 249 pages of 80gsm paper. They are in beautiful colours I just had to go for it.

To summarise…

I hope this gives you more of an idea of whether this system is right for you! If you do decide or have already decided to start a bullet journal then please let me know in the comments or twitter, I would love to see what you all do with your page spreads. If you do decide bullet journaling is not for you, let me know what alternative planners your find because I am always up for trying something new.
